I wanted to buy a new portable laptop which is light weight and also thin. Also I did not want to get into Apple ecosystem, so MacBook were out of my wishlist. I was already owner of HP 15-R006TU laptop with Intel Core i3 4010U, 4 GB RAM, 15.6 inch screen with 1366×768 resolution and 500 GB Hard disk. So laptop which I was looking for should be faster than my HP laptop and it should be a good upgrade.
Asus UX305FA which the last year model of UX305CA was on my wishlist for quite a while but I wanted latest Intel Core M processor. There are no laptops in India which are below 50k price range and are ultraportable with good specs. Only 1 laptop below 50k price is having Core M processor and that is HP Pavilion 11-K106TU x360 Notebook (P3C90PA) (Intel Core M3- 4GB RAM- 1TB HDD- 29.46 cm (11.6) Touch- Windows 10).
Laptop I bought and reviewing is Asus UX305CA-FC074T (UX305C). It has Intel COre M3 6Y30 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 13.3 inch Full HD IPS display, 256 GB SSD, 3 USB 3.0 ports (2 high speed and 1 slow speed), card read slot, micro HDMI port, 3.5 mm headphone jack, front facing camera and ambient light sensor of adapting display brightness. US version of this laptop has 8 GB RAM and an ultraHD display.
Built quality is excellent and just look and feel of it shows that this one is on a premium side. Although the laptop color mentioned is black, it ooks slightly purple. Other available colors are white and gold.
Display is sharp but as the glass over it has matte finish the display does not look as crisp as it should have. But due to matte finish there is hardly any background light reflection which makes this laptop display excellent to work on. Ambient light sensor is provided to adapt the brightness.
Performance of this laptop is very good as you can see in the video below. Ony down side I noticed is that when multiple tabs are open in Chrome for a longer time and when you are switching to tab, the page reloads again. This might be for saving battery and RAM.
Keyboard is very good and much better than the one I had in my HP laptop. TrackPad come with smart gestures app which makes it more like a MacBook. Scrolling and other gestures with trackapd are super smooth. Two finger scrolling in Chrome is so smooth it really impressed me.
Battery life promised is 10 hours but on my moderate to heavy use I got about 5-6 hours of screen on time. Most of my work is Chrome browser based with atleast 10 tabs open at any point of time.
The laptop has excellent built quality because of the full metal body. It is thin at 12 mm and weighs only 1.2 kgs. The screen is full HD and matte looks makes it very much usable due to visibility in backgrounds with light. The keyboard is good but not the best I have used on a laptop but is excellent for a laptop this thin. The touchpad is very accurate and sensitive and Asus Smart Gestures makes is, even more, user friendly. Pinch to zoom and smooth scrolling of web pages is a treat for the eyes to view. Read and write speed within the SSD and to other devices like Pen Drive and external Hard Disk are extremely fast thanks to SSD and USB 3 ports. The laptop has Micro HDMI post so an adapter is needed for connecting HDMI devices. As there is no ethernet port because of the thinness of this laptop, a USB ethernet adapter comes bundled into the box. The laptop sleeve is also included in the box.
Battery life is about 7-8 hours on light usage and 4-5 hours on heavy usage. Only negative is the speakers which have average loudness.
In an all and excellent laptop and a must buy for everyone who is looking for a ultraportable laptop with powerful CPU and good battery life.
To summarize, this is an excellent laptop for those who want an ultraportable laptop (ultrabook) and those who ove Windows OS and do not want to enter into Apply eco system.
I got this laptop for Rs. 51,500/- in Mumbai, India. This is the cheapest Intel Core M laptop with a Full HD display. I would highly recommend it to everyone over other laptops.
